It has been months since I have eaten here, but I'm still thinking about this place and telling anyone who is traveling to the Columbus area to stop by.
From the small but amazingly tasty buffet to the desserts, this place was perfect. My husband, son and I all decided to stick with the buffet and was so happy with the selection.
We were plenty full, but decided anyways to grab a salted caramel cream puff and slice of german chocolate cake. They were both so freaking good that I'm glad I didn't pass up the opportunity.
I'm so glad we found this little spot in the German Village and can't wait for our next visit to stop by this place once more. -

I was really excited to try this place since I heard so many good things. However, I was a bit underwhelmed with the food. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of German food in general, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I tried out their buffet and if you look at it from a price stand point, it's really not bad at all! I just wanted to see more unique items offered and perhaps more things other than sausage and potatoes. I also shared a jumbo cream puff with my friend (not included in the buffet) and it was good but nothing special. -

Let's be honest, where else around town can you get a German buffet of this caliber?? Schmidt's blows the competition away! Nestled into the quaint German Village area of Columbus, Schmidt's draws you in with friendly decorations, flags, and upbeat German music.
When you enter, you walk past a display counter filled with home made sausage for sale by the pound, then another display counter filled with mouth watering desserts, and finally past a live traditional German band filling the restaurant with bounce-worthy polka style music.
We chose to get the buffet. We tried-
Garlic Knockwurst- Crisp bite and wonderful garlic flavor.
Bahama Mama Sausage- Caribbean style spices that leave you craving more.
Mild Bahama Mama Sausage- A milder version of the above- our least favorite as it was the least flavorful.
Traditional Brats- a fantastic beer brat flavor- my personal favorite.
Sausage Stew- A surprising gem of a dish! Large chunks of sausage, macaroni noodles, and mixed into a sweet and spicy, Caribbean style sauce that is bursting with flavor.
Pork Loin- Good flavor, but a little dry.
Smashed Potatoes and White Gravy- Creamy and wonderful, and the gravy goes well with all of the different sausages.
German Potato Salad- Warm and satisfying with the perfect combination of salty and subtly sweet.
Sauerkraut- The perfect accompaniment to the sausage.
Green Beans and Spatzels- Tasty, however it would be nice to have the spatzels without the beans, so we could put the gravy right on them.
Pistachio Pudding- Reminiscent of my grandmothers recipe. Old world, sweet, and addictive. Great way to end a heavy meal.
Cream Puffs- THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD! I tried the traditional vanilla filled with chocolate syrup on top. My brother tried the peanut butter filling with the chocolate fudge and chopped nuts on top. They are huge, half pound each! And they are the most satisfying sweet you can imagine. -

Start here. Come hungry cause you got some eating to do. Buffet lunch? Under $20? GTHO here!
German potato salad... Mac n cheese... mashed taters... sausage on sausage crime... and sauerkraut to help clean it all out.
Grabbed a cream puff to go and the filling oh my the filling. I will be grabbing 2 the next time. Ain't gonna be sharing mine with my wife next time. I love her but at some point I must draw the line.
Check it out, you will not regret it. -

Disclaimer: not a sausage person!
Took a trip to Schmidt's to see what the hype was about. I don't eat sausage too often, but everyone in Columbus has recommended the place. Had a late lunch around 3pm, and it was decently busy. You could tell the place was popular! Service, however, kept up with the fast pace of customers, and our server, Summer, was really kind.
I had the Old World Sausage Sampler Platter, and my boyfriend got the pork schnitzel. The schnitzel was really flavorful, had good portion size, and went well with the green beans & spaetzle. The sausage platter was decent, nothing mind-blowing, though it did get me craving $3 supermarket Portuguese sausage from back home.
Now, on to the cream puffs. I'm a big fan of Liliha Bakery cream puffs, so I've been waiting a while to try Schmidt's. Honestly, they were a little disappointing. Even for a dessert of its kind, the filling was VERY sweet. The pastry itself was pretty dry, a bit overdone on the bake. I'd recommend the peanut butter over the vanilla - the nuttiness of it distracts from the sugar overload and adds to the flavor profile of the dessert.
While I appreciate that Columbus stands behind Schmidt's, it's just not for me.
